Whenever people think of psychedelic music album art they invariably go to the paisley and incense cover art of the 60′s as they call up Disraeli Gears, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn or that ol’ chestnut – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. And those who don’t pull out London circa 1967 invariably head into the 70′s with Yes, Uriah Heep or Journey. And don’t get me started on Psytrance – kitsch deluxe.
But I recently came upon an image that is, to me, the best psychedelic album art I’ve seen. It is from the 1990′s compilation of a 60′s/70′s band – Led Zeppelin’s Remasters; the cover image of the third CD in the set.
I’ve always felt that there’s no need to dress up psychedelia in wild colours and crazy loopy faces – the natural reality is much more striking.
